The OC CCI project has completed its third year (Phase 1) and has released the v1.0 product to the international science community following internal quality control and analysis. Phase 2 is now underway, and continuity is maintained through the participation of the same consortium members as Phase 1: Plymouth Marine Laboratory (Science lead) (UK), Telespazio VEGA (UK), Brockmann Consult (Germany), Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (Germany), Joint Research Centre (EU), HYGEOS (France), Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (Norway) and Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Portugal) but enhanced with new CRG members (University of Reading) and user engagement (Sam Lavender through VEGA).
In Phase 2 the user requirements will continually be reviewed through consultation with CMUG and CRG, and against the GCOS requirements where appropriate. Commonality with other CCI projects will be explored e.g. reference data sets and thresholds, and a review of product quality, spatial and temporal resolution and quality indicators will be undertaken. A further atmospheric correction Round Robin and an in-water Round Robin will be undertaken to establish the best performing Algorithms. Lessons learned from the Round Robin during phase 1 will be implemented and the process automated where possible. In year 2 the project will investigate Case-2 waters that contain substances such as suspended sediments and coloured dissolved organic matter, which modify ocean colour independently of phytoplankton, will be considered, as will the possible use of VIIRS and OCM-2 data (quality permitting) before the launch and inclusion of Sentinel-3 OLCI data in year 3.
